BREVARD ALLIANCE OF BLACK SCHOOL EDUCATORS

Remembering Local Hero's 365 a Year
Harry T. and Harriet V. Moore
Harry T. Moore was a fourth-grade teacher at a Black elementary school in Brevard County, when he met Harriette Vyda Simms, a former schoolteacher. The couple married and completed their college education at Bethune Cookman College and eventually returned to teaching. Harry and Harriette were eventually fired from their teaching jobs because of their activism. In 2021 the Brevard School Board issued a resolution honoring the Moore's and acknowledged the unfair firing by the 1946 School Board.

Mrs. Braun and other Brevard ABSE members were excited to support Suntree Elementary School as they hosted their first Read-In. "The National African American Read-In (AARI) is a groundbreaking effort to encourage communities to read together, centering African American books and authors. It was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month"
